'To serve' and 'to give' should define your life

"For Christians, service is not something to be tacked onto our schedules if we can spare the time. It is the heart of the Christian life. Jesus came 'to serve' and 'to give'—and those two verbs should define your life on earth, too. "

We are commanded to serve God. Jesus was unmistakable: "Your attitude must be like my own, for I, the Messiah, did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give my life." (Matthew 20:28 LB).

For Christians, service is not something to be tacked onto our schedules if we can spare the time. It is the heart of the Christian life. Jesus came "to serve" and "to give"—and those two verbs should define your life on earth, too. Serving and giving sum up God's fourth purpose for your life. Mother Teresa once said, "Holy living consists in doing God's work with a smile."

Jesus taught that spiritual maturity is never an end in itself. Maturity is for ministry! We grow up in order to give out. It is not enough to keep learning more and more. We must act on what we know and practice what we claim to believe. Impression without expression causes depression. Study without service leads to spiritual stagnation.

The old comparison between the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea is still true. Galilee is a lake full of life because it takes in water but also gives it out. In contrast, nothing lives in the Dead Sea because, with no outflow, the lake has stagnated.

The last thing many believers need is to go to another Bible study. They already know far more than they are putting into practice. What they need are serving experiences in which they can exercise their spiritual muscles.

Serving is the opposite of our natural inclination. Most of the time we're more interested in "serve us" than service. We say, "I'm looking for a church that meets my needs and blesses me," not "I'm looking for a place to serve and be a blessing." We expect others to serve us, not vice versa.

But as we mature in Christ, the focus of our lives should increasingly shift to living a life of service. The mature follower of Jesus stops asking, "Who's going to meet my needs?" and starts asking, "Whose needs can I meet?"

I had an interesting conversation with the gal who cut my hair yesterday. She told me that she was LDS and she allowed me to ask her some questions about what she believed. I asked her about how she felt about Joseph Smith (LDS founder) and his supposed ability to find buried treasure in fields when he was a young man. She said that at first she was really uncomfortable with the idea, but she grew to accept it as the truth. I couldn't believe that she has allowed herself to be deceived by this obvious falsehood. It makes me wonder if there is anything in my life that I have accepted without really investigating it for myself. I encouraged her to really examine the doctrines of the LDS church to be sure that she really understand all that the church teaches but does not necessarily advertise. Any church that cannot proclaim their beliefs in public is a church that I would have serious doubts about. I pray for all mormons that God will able to shed light on the falsehoods that the LDS church endorses but keeps their people in the dark about. Thank you God that we do not have to earn our salvation as the Mormons believe. God's peace to you all.

Sense of Community

The great thing about moving to what I call "Mormonville", is that is has really challenged me to think about what I really believe and where I really stand on a number of issues. I have some reflections of the Mormon people for you and what has God has recently laid upon my heart lately. Not less than five minutes after we had arrived in Payson (the town we live in Utah), we were approached by two of our neighbors asking if we needed any help with moving in or whatever. Keep in mind that it was about 9:00pm on a weekday evening and it was already dark. I was so impressed at the expression of kindness that it showed us. The sense of community that the Mormon people have for one another is incredible. It makes me wonder why if I really understand a sense of community like the Mormon people we have recently met. I really don't have that sense of belonging like the people in my new neighborhood. I'm actually envious in some respects but the people have such a sense of identity with their fellow neighbors. Many of their social activities and community events are organized through their local church. I'll admit I am embarassed to say that I have never felt that sense of community in the Christian churches that I have attended. I think their is a lot I can learn about community values from my neighbors. I pray that I can adopt some of these community values in my own life. My questions for you are these: What's your sense of community? Do you feel it could be better? What steps can you take in your own life to better foster you own Christian community?

Hey Everybody,
Mary Beth and I having recently decided to move to Utah for me (Marty) to pursue a Information Technology position here. It was a difficult decision as we really wanted to stay in Idaho. We felt that our mission in Idaho was not completed, but our financial need was never really met in Idaho. We still believe that God has a plan for our ministry, but he is asking me to, like Paul, "make tents" for a while. We are praying for God to open up a mission here for us in Utah. We are currently living in a community that is over 90% Mormon and we pray that we can be salt and light in a place for many people live in false hope. Pray that we can graciously shed light in the darker and desperate places here. Take care and God's peace.

Hello All -
I know it has been forever since I have posted to the blog. My apologizes!
Honestly, until about a month ago I really didn't have any significant to share with you all. However now I have do have something cool to share. I am going to be serving with a youth ministry this summer called Youth Dynamics (YD) in Idaho. I am very excited about this opportunity to work with teens here in the Northwest and sharing the experience of whitewater rafting and also encourage their relationship with Jesus. I am going to load up some video clips of a trip Mary Beth and I took with a local high school group yesterday. Enjoy!

Hi there! Just thought it would be nice to update you a bit. The Launch Pad ministry is still going, but we made the decision to rent an apartment as of June 1st. It was very encouraging and even invigorating to be around teens nearly all the time, but it was also getting hard to have someone in the house at any moment. We sure were hoping to stick it out longer, but three months is all we were there. Marty is continuing to do some computer programming work with Rock Brown, the director, and possibly will volunteer with the kids this fall. My job is going very well. I really enjoy it--my heart's desire is to be a Mommy, but if that's not going to be, at least for right now, then I am happy to work--especially in the field of Deaf Education! Our apt. is ok; we're one in a complex of about 50 places; so it's not too crowded. We are eager for the day when we don't have to be in an apt. but for now, we are very grateful, and remembering to be content in all circumstances (Ephesians) It's been so incredibly hot here lately! Like 105+ every day. I can't believe it. We stay inside most of the time with the AC running; We're going to a church called Vineyard Christian Fellowship www.vineyardboise.org. It's really great. I (MB) just finished up a week of organizing and teaching the crafts for the Vacation Bible School with 196 kids :) It was a wild ride, but wonderful, of course! My dad and his wife Annette are coming out for a visit in a few weeks. I am looking forward to seeing them :) I hope we can get back to MN/SD at Thanksgiving or Christmas time.

What's up with the Scherrs. . . in Idaho!?!

I couldn't believe it when I saw the date. . .Feb. 20th since our last post? Wow! Around that time, we really started wondering what we were doing out here and whether or not this was the path God intended for us. We felt God had shut the door on the Christian Youth Ranch idea in Idaho City, which is why we came out here in the first place. In February, Mary Beth had gotten a very good job with the state school for the deaf and blind, so we had insurance and a consistent salary again, so obviously we were confused and concerned as MB was feeling more "secure" (at least in a worldly way) and we were more unsure about our mission (spiritually) as we'd ever been. So, discerning God's "voice", His purpose for us, was once again our challenge. But don't we do that EVERY day? Was God saying NO or was He just redirecting us?

At the end of February, A man and wife spoke at the church we’ve been attending, at the end of the month, describing a new ministry that had just been going a few months. Their ministry was reaching out to teens, sharing the Gospel and message of salvation with them. Marty decided to talk with this guy. . . maybe God would have something for us with that ministry. Their meeting went well, and we were actually invited to live at the ministry property. So, we've been at Launch Pad/Launch Ministries since March 1st. (1705 W. Pine Ave. Meridian, ID 83642 208-855-5020) Marty is a part-time intern with Rock Brown, the ministry founder, as Mary Beth continues her 40 hr/week job with the state School Outreach Office in Middleton (about 25 min away). So far, it's been working out well as the ministry gets Marty's help (in many pricital ways) and we're living rent-free! Our church and Sunday school class has been very good to us; someone even loaned us a bed! It's a bit odd here. Of course, it's not really "our" home,but God has a here for now, so "it's more than enough" (as Chris Tomlin sings) for us. My new job/career is going well too. We're not sure it's really going to be the thing for me from here on out. A baby and family is our first desire, but for now, it's great to be in this professional role. God has surely provided that for us too. So, the answer is...We all wish there was one final difinitive answer, don't we? For now, the answer is that He is refining and redirecting us. It's scary, but we know it's the best place to be. Better is one day in His courts than a thosand elsewhere, right? Right On! (as one of our new Idahoan friends would say)

Now, we are starting to look ahead to the summer, and wonder what that will hold for us. Launch Ministries doesn't really have much planned for the summer months, so Marty is really beginning to consider how the Lord may use him in an outdoor ministry. We took a short visit to a Christian camp/ranch just two hours away recently. It's beautiful, in the Sawtooth Mountains (you can look that up if you want). Marty's considering doing some volunteer work there this summer, but we'll see. God may or may not have another way! We've learned that much so far! Still, Marty holds a firm conviction in his heart that the place to reach and teach kids and families is at a Christian Camp. So, please pray for us. There might be opportunities to serve at such a camp, such as Intermountin, in the pictures, and there might not be! God is on the throne, we know and believe that, and CLING to that truth!

We still haven't made it "home" to Minnesota to get the rest of our stuff yet (bed, dresser, bikes, clothes, etc ) but we will when we feel the time is right. For now, we're having fun discovering the great Thrift Stores in Boise! We miss our family and friends and think of you all often. Blessings and love,

Asking for prayer

I wanted to ask for some prayer today. Mary Beth and I will be meeting the board of directors from Launch Pad Ministries tonight to talk about us moving to the house to be the "house parents". God's at it again!

Hey all -
I wanted to let you know that we are very excited about the probability of working with a new ministry to reach high school students. It is near Boise (in a subdivision called Meridian) called Launch Pad Ministries. The web site is: www.launchexperience.org
The ministry has purchased a house across from one of the local high schools which they use as a gathering place for students during their lunch hour and what refered to as "Religious Released Time". It's part of a law that allows students about an hour a day for Religious studies. Mary Beth and I have been invited to move into the house in order to be the "house parents". I would also be working directly in the ministry helping out with the day-to-day needs. And MB's role is still being determined. Perhaps she will lead a young girls' Bible study or offer English tutoring on the weekends. I am really exicted about this opportunity. The board of directors is meeting on Monday to make a decision about this. Please pray for the Lord's hand in the decision making process. And they've already met and love Bailey. What a plus! Our realtor/land lady is letting us out of this place March 1st. We have come to really like this little town, so it'll be a little sad to leave, but the benefits of this house and FREE RENT (so we can save for a family/adoption, fix our car, whatever God has in store for us) and being part of this ministry--we are dreaming of the connections we might make between the Launch Pad and Big House Ministries already of course--far outweigh anything here! We'd love to fill you in on the details of how God has been so good to us lately. Just call us or write! We took a walk along the Boise river today; it was 52 degrees this afternoon. Wow!

What impact with this have on working with the youth ranch? I will still be working with the board of directors of Big House Ministries and assisting where I can. I pray that Launch Pad and Big House could possibly develop a partnership down the road and be able to work together to reach our young people for Christ.

It's going to be 54 degrees here today! I don't miss that Midwest weather at all. Take care all.

Barista No More!

We've been staying wtih our friend, Todd, in Garden City/Boise for the past thee weeks. I'm in the midst of finalizing things with the HR dept. of the Idaho School for the Deaf and Blind. Next week, I'm starting a new job!! I'll be an Outreach Consultant for the school. The school is a couple of hours away, but we are only moving a half hour west since my office (the regional office) is out in Middleton! All the Boisians we know think of Middleton as a little farming community, but hey all you city folk, we have news for you: it's really growing and new businesses are going up all the time. To our MN friends: it's a lot like a Big Lake or Becker! Perfect for us :) We take posession on the 1st. Just a week from today, I can't believe it. We're just renting .. . at least for now. It's a small, 2 BR house, but we think it's great. Marty and the other board members of the ministry have been getting together more often lately and have been talking to other non-profit kinds of groups out here to see how it's done! God's been so faithful in not revealing too much too quickly. I think we'd be so overwhelmed, and probably get scared and run away if we knew it all now. I just finished reading a book about a family's journey, physically and spiritually, in adopting a baby from Romania in the '90's. The woman learned the same thing; that God gave her just enough information for each step she and her husband were on. Not too much--but just enough. That's our God, right? Just enough! Perfect for us, and our needs!

So, my coffee (espresso!) makin' days are over for now, but if you put me in front of an espresso machine, I can make a mean Latte' or Mocha' --haha-

Job in Boise?

A young man, Todd, also on the Board of Directors, for the ranch, has allowed us a bit of reprieve/civilazation this weekend down in B-town (funny that the locals call Boise B-town; that's exactly what locals called Bakersfield, CA!) Besides that, I had a telephone interview with ISDB--Idaho School for the Deaf and Blind. They interviewed me to be a consultant with their outreach program in Boise. I think it would be wonderful--a perfect job for me! Don't worry or think that Marty and I are quitting the mission we've been sent here for. Not at all. But we are seeing that it's going to take some time and money to get the ranch going! And time, we have plenty of, but money . . .now that's another story. We cam out here with some, but we suspected that by the end of the year, it would run out. I have fun with my coffee shop/espresso/bakery/deli job in Idaho City, but 50 hrs/2 weeks at $6.00/hr just doesn't cut it :) And Marty's been able to find computer programming/database work via the internet but that's sporadic too. So, it's down the hill (literarlly!) we come. We pray that I'm offered the consultant job soon (of course, they have to check my references and all that jazz first) and that we can start building a life down here. As you know, adoption is still on our hearts, and we know we must have good jobs and insurance to do that. We've been going to a great church, also, and we want to be in town so we can join their weekly Bible studies and get-togethers. So, God is redirecting us a bit. Please pray for us and our direction. God is calling us to. . . Serve, give, be humble,

Well, when we got here, it was clear to me that we were here to serve. God had clearly called Marty, and therefore, had called me, to serve. Exactly what that meant, we weren't sure, but we were serving--helping out--in just about any way we could. Now, we've just come to observe Christmas, remembering when God gave Himself to us as the baby Jesus, and Marty and I have been learning that even with little means, we are asked to give. Even when the receiver doesn't seem to be very grateful? YES! Even when you only have $5 to put in the offering plate? YES! Because He is teaching us to trust Him. That day that we only had $5 on Sunday morning, Marty was obedient to give it, and then WE were given some money to go out for lunch, as the man put it. Amen! And is it hard to ask for help? Yes, for me it is. I don't think my family ever really was in need when I was a kid. My parents sure did teach me to make things stretch. Mom never let a good deal go to waste! But I don't remember putting myserlf in a position of leaning on others for help. I always knew there were those who needed a helping hand once in a while, and I wanted to be that helping hand. But this week we reached out; we asked for help. And you know what? Those that we asked were glad to reach out. Just like I am when I'm asked to lend a hand. We're all part of One Big Family. Right? Amen! Well, this weekend, we were invited to go to a little New Years party and then on New Year's Day to stay in town (Boise) and watch the BSU football game. We'll post more later everyone! Back at the Ranch

Hello All,
Mary Beth and I have now decided that we are going to spend the winter at Thorn Creek Ranch which is part of Big House Ministries www.bighouseministries.com We are in the process of winterizing a cabin on the property and we hope to moving to the cabin soon. We will post some pictures of our cabin when we get a chance. Mary Beth and I are going to be working in Idaho City which is about 20 miles from the ranch. We pray that God will be with us this winter as we adjust to the wilderness environment that he has called us to serve in. We are surviving on gas generated power, propane and wood heat. We are learning to adjust to the lights going off at any moment to learning to live in "Idaho time" which is considerably slower than what we are used to. However we are learning to be patient and what on the Lord's good timing. We live in a very peaceful winter wonderland at the moment and we are learning to enjoy that. We have been without the internet for quite some time but we now will have regular access to the internet going forward. We plan to post more often at this point. Well, we've moved. . .but just over to the main house :) It was decided that Marty and I would be the new House Managers. Exactly what that means is still a bit undecided but mostly it means that Marty has a title, which is Facilities Manager, and I'm doing care for the residents. At night, we're "on call" and I guess we're the go-to people for the staff (which is rather interesting since we're still learning the ropes ourselves). It's a joy to be here though and we know God is moving in this place. So, we're living in a very nice 2-bedroom apt. which is most of the upstairs of the main house. We have our own entrance from the outside, so we don't have to go through the main house but we can if we want to. So, if you want to support us here as we carry out this ministry God has for us, that would be great! You will get a tax deductible receipt from Mikyler's world. I am earning a salary but it's about 1/2 as a much as I made teaching, and although Marty has a title, he really won't be earning a salary until Mikylar's World can afford to pay him (from outside gift/funding). For now, our compensation is really the 2 bedroom apt. and we certainly aren't complaining. We love it here in ID so far. It's 65 degress today! Yesterday we went swimming OUTSIDE! Well, we'll write more with pictures, but I wanted to let you know that we have a new mailing address and phone number--hopefully, it won't change for a while! At least a few months, right?! At Mikylars World

Mary Beth and I have moved to a place called Mikylar's World http://www.mikylar.org It is a ranch style ministry for adults with disabilities. We feel that the Lord has called us to work with this ministry in whatever ways we can at this point. Mary Beth and I will take the next few weeks to determine how we can be most effective to the ministry. Please pray as we go through this process and discover how God will use us. We live in one of the houses on the ranch and we are very happy with the setup. We will take some pictures of the ranch and post them to our blog soon. In Idaho Falls

Mary Beth and I are on are way to Idaho City (near Boise). We made it all the way through Montana today -- about 10 hours. We have about 5-6 hours tommorow to make it to Thorn Creek Ranch. We are doing well, getting a little tired of driving though. There's not much to see in North Dakota and Eastern Montana. Western Montana is a little more interesting with the Mountains. Bailey (our Brittany) is doing well - she's a great traveler. Our car is doing well despite an a blown fuse back in Fargo, ND which was fixed quickly on Saturday morning. Take care we'll check in again soon. I'll try to post some pics as well.

Trip to Idaho

MB and I are getting ready to go to Idaho to check out Thorn Creek Ranch, a camp part of Big House Ministries http://www.bighouseministries.com We are leaving on Saturday and expect to arrive Monday or Tuesday of next week. The purpose of the trip is to evaluate the camp to determine if it is a place where we could serve long term. From everything we know so far it looks to be a place where God is really moving and we are excited about that. I ask for prayer for our trip. Take care and talk to y'all soon.

Update from the Cabin

I just wanted to give you all an update from us. We are staying with some good folks at their cabin near Nisswa, MN. We have been praying for our upcoming trip out to Idaho to visit a camp ministry that is just getting going. Our prayer is that God can use us in helping this ministry move forward. Here's a few pictures of the cabin and "garage lodge" that we are staying in.

We have some prayer request for y'all.
1. We are praying that Tim, the director of the camp in Idaho, will be able to find a place for us to stay temporarily while we visit.
2. We pray that we will be a "good fit" for the ministry.
3. We pray that we will be able to raise support to be involved in the ministry long term if God directs us that way.
4. We pray for work options to supplement our income while we minister at the camp.
5. We pray for continued communion with God everyday and with each other.

Thank you for all your prayers and support. We will update you soon on how things are going.

The Loft

Long Time, No Update

We have just finished a wonderful, and very busy summer at Trout Lake Camp near Brainerd. As you might remember, I was the Head Wrangler at the horse corral giving instruction to campers in the morning as to the "how-to's" of riding and taking care of a horse, and giving trail rides in the afternoon. I just loved seeing the beauty of God's creation atop a horse's back. (Boaz was "my horse" this summer --he's the one in the picture with me) and showing it to the kids I was leading. Mary Beth was the director of the craft shack (as it was affectionately called by Camp personnel) She assisted the campers every day as tie dyed tee-shirts were made, bracelets and necklaces were crafted, and campers and counselors escaped the heat with their ice cream cones from the soda fountain just up the hill. She witnessed God's grace every day too, as she was blessed with the girls and boys who visted the arts n' crafts area every day! It was a good summer, full of both successes and challenges. God is revealing his awesomeness to us as we are trusting Him with our whole selves more and more every day. THANK YOU to each of you who gave to us so that we might continue in this ministry of camping. We know what a step it is to trust the Lord with the finances He's given us. We are currently staying with some new friends we met at the church we were able to attend this summer in Nisswa. We ask for your prayers as we are in the process of checking out a Christian camp called Thorn Creek Ranch in Idaho. The web site is www.bighouseministries.com if you would like to check it out. They have need for people willing to help serve at the Ranch and we feel the Lord calling us to check it out. We hope to visit the camp in the few weeks so to if it is a good fit for us. Summer is Flying By!

Hey Everyone -
My apologizes for not blogging more often this summer. Mary Beth and I have so much to share with you all and hardly anytime to do it. Also, we have limited computer access so we can't get online very often. So, here's a brief summary of our last two weeks of camp. Our first camp was 1st,2nd, and 3rd graders and it went fairly well. The schedule was pretty hectic and we have almost 300 kids that week. MB and I got to work with about 150 of those kids in our program areas. MB is the Arts & Crafts Coordinator (Craft Shack Lady) and I am one of the Horse Wranglers - fancy word for people who can work with horses. In the morning we teach skills class, MB teaches a specific craft to the kids and I teach riding instruction both in an arena and out on the trail. The schedule is tight so kids are sometimes late and classes run long, but somehow the day works out in the end. In the afternoon I take kids out on trail rides and kids can come down the Craft Shack and make tye die t-shirts, etc in the afternoon. There are night games for the kids that sometimes run until 10:30pm which we can't stay up late enough to participate in. My day starts at 6:45am and runs until 5:30 or so which makes it hard to participate in the night activities. However I have been able to be involved in chapel time playing guitar and bass in the early evening. All in all things are going well. MB and I just have to remember that it's God that is in control of how things go everyday and not us. We are reminded that in our hearts we plan our course, but the Lord determines our steps. Thanks for all your prayers and support with what we are doing this summer. Also, please pray for us for the fall as we are homeless and jobless as of September. We are really leaning on the Lord for where he will take us in the fall. MB and I are both seeking out employment and trusting that God will direct our steps in this area and every area of our life. It's raining here at Trout Lake Camp this morning. Even though this weather requires a little more adjusting, there's just something about it that I love. God's "bigness" is revealed in the rain, I think. I know He is mighty and in control. Of everything! Joy comes with the morning. . .

This is picture of us in Rapid City just a few weeks ago. We went out there for my Uncle Scott's funeral. He died, age 50, after a life-long battle with Fredrich's Ataxia (sorta like MS). He loved Jesus, and had the motto: Don't get angry (with God), get Active! Thanks Scott; that's a great motto for life. I know he believed it :)

"Joy comes witht the morning. .. ." Do u know what song I'm thinkin' of this morning? Marty and I have always loved that song, "I'm tradin my sorrows" It's easier to sing a song like that than do what it says, but we'd be foolish to just sing "I'm layin it down for the joy of the Lord" and not live that way. A friend of mine (Heay out there to Sheila L!!) told me last year, "The best way to know what you believe is to look at your life" She really got me thinking. Do I live what I say I believe? If my beheavior doesn't match my words then maybe I don't really believe what I'm saying I do. Pretty convicting huh? The Word says it too in James 1:22, "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says." Ah. .. food for thought--

It's just after 8:00 in the morning and the windows are open and the birds are singing and the breeze is blowin' in. I love it! Don't you? Today's another day of moving stuff over to the storage unit. I may go for a job interview to Brainerd Schools tomorrow. They're looking for a teacher in their DHH (deaf, hard-of-hearing) program. It would be for next school year, and of course, we're not sure Marty will get a perm. full-time job up there (hopefully at the camp we'll be serving at this summer) or not. Our prayer, of course, is that the Lord will reveal CLEARLY to us where he wants us for the fall.

I just saw that my sister-in-law signed on. Hey to all of you down in Iowa. I just talked with my 3 year-old niece the other day; she's growning up so fast, and I miss them all so much.

We're "almost" ready to go. . .

Hello everyone :) We know it's been a while since our last post. We wanted to let you know that in a couple of weeks we'll be heading to Trout Lake Camp (north of Brainerd) to minister for the summer. We are very excited to go. . .. we went up this past weekend so that Marty could begin the process of taking down the barbed wire fencing of the pasture. This spring has been long, but very good, for us. We've been able to spend a lot of time together. And that has its pro's and con's, right? (haha) We know that we only see a part of the whole picture God has for us. We just hold on to that truth. Well, the first camp is June 14th. Please keep us and the children that will come to Trout in your prayers this summer.

Personally, please pray for me. My endomitriosis pain is really terrible lately. Pray that after this summer, one of us will get a permenant job with insurance and we can once again look at the possibility of having the surgery done that was advised last April. I pray all the time that if God is willing, He would heal me. I trust Him and believe He can if it's His plan. AHH....

Not Ashamed

I just thinking this week that it would be easy to be ashamed of the Gospel. The world tells us that we need to make our own success, be independent, make our own way in live. The Bible tells us a different story. Jesus talks about being servant in this passage of Matthew 20:
20 Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him. 21 "What is it you want?" he asked. She said, "Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom." 22 "You don't know what you are asking," Jesus said to them. "Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?" "We can," they answered. 23 Jesus said to them, "You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father." 24 When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers. 25 Jesus called them together and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

I am glad to say that I am proud to proclaim that I am one of God's servants. I am happy to be in his service. Lord I pray for humility and patience as you mold me into the person you have designed me to be. Thank you for your grace. Amen.

Marmon Valley Interview

Yesterday I had a phone interview with Marmon Valley http://www.marmonvalley.com It's a Christian horse camp in Ohio that I where I would really feel honored to serve. The Executive Director, Matt Willey, is the brother of Jane Olsen, the lady that I am working for this summer at Trout Lake Camp http://www.troutlakecamp.org Now, I'm playing the waiting game. If they want to proceed further, I will be invited to come for a visit this spring. Mary Beth and I had set aside a week in April just in case. I am really praying about this opportunity because it would be a dream job for me. They are looking for a Program Coordinator to help organize and plan their camps as well as a variety of other program related tasks. The idea is that they want this position to lead into the Program Director position over time. The only drawback is that since Mary Beth and I have committed to work at Trout Lake this summer, I am not available for this position until September. I am praying that they will still consider me even with our time constraint. Please pray for God's will in this situation and patience for Mary Beth and I as we wait for further information. Thank you.

Watered Down Truth?

I was just thinking today and wondering if, as Christians, it's too easy to water down the truth of the Gospel message? What I mean is that I wonder if we are too concerned about offending or intimidating people if we speak the plain truth to them about the saving grace of Jesus. I'll admit, I struggle with this question on a regular basis. I was reading this morning from the Gospel of Mark in the 16th chapter. I particularly like the following verses where Christ is commissioning his disciples to go out and preach the Gospel message:

Mark 16: 15-16
15He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. 16Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

It's clear from Jesus's words that those who do not believe in him will be condemned. Now I believe that it's important to develop a relationship with someone before we hit them with the raw truth of the Gospel and the way things are. However, sometimes I think I am concerned that if I speak too much truth that we will be rejected and people won't like me. After all, the Gospel message is foolishness to those who are perishing. I reference the verse from Corinthians where Paul talks about what the world thinks of Jesus:

1 Corinthians 1:18
18For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

I pray that God can teach me how to better present the message of salvation to those who I interact with my life. Amen.

Lost Souls

I woke up early this morning and was compelled to open my Bible to 1 Corinthians 1:18. It says this: "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." Why am I so bothered then when people are uncomfortable with the Gospel message? I have met so many people in my days that don't want to have anything to do with God or Jesus. They have become content with their own definition of the world and how things work. In the past this issue has really angered me. But God has shown me that I must be compassionate to those who do not know him. It's clear that their fate is not a good one and I must continue to share the good news with them. In my older, younger age I have realized that my actions and attitudes often speak more effectively than do my words. By being a living example of a Christ follower, I hope that I can touch the lives of those around me. Not for my own glory, but the ultimate glory of Jesus Christ. Lord, show me how I can live better for you and bring you glory. Amen.

Raising the Standard

I heard a message this weekend in which the Pastor challenged me by saying that our society and even the Christian society is living by such a low standard. We often excuse what we know if wrong because "that's just the way the world is." I think about the movies that are on TV or in the theatres, and it seems like you can't watch a movie or TV program that doesn't have some level of violence or vulgarity in it. I think we need to challenge each other as Christians to rise above and live according to a higher standard. We need to raise the bar of our behavior as I believe Christ calls us to do. I was reading a verse from Romans where Paul talks about how we should be living.

Romans 8:5 Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.

Good News

Well,
I am glad to say that I was able to fixed the car today without too much "damage" to the checkbook. I had about 3 hours waiting for the car to be fixed and so I finished a book I have been reading called "True Faced". It's an excellent book that encourages us to be the people that God created us to be. It talks about the idea that there are two roads we can take as a Christian. The road of Pleasing God, or the Road of Trusting God. The book explains that the Road of Pleasing God sounds good at first and is appealing. However this road leads to what they refer to as the Room of Good Intentions. In this room, everyone is out to please God, but they are afraid to show there true selves to each other for fear of how others will react. These people are constantly striving to do more for God, and sin less. However, it's an endless pursuit and ultimately not very rewarding. Down the other road, the Road of Trusting God, leads to the Room of Grace. In this room, everyone can trust one another with their stuff and they can help each other work on sin issues together. In this room you find people who have a genuine heart for God, but are still broken and have a great reliance on God to meet their needs. Ironically, the Road of Trusting God ultimately leads to pleasing God because God wants us to trust him and this pleases him. In the Room of Grace, we can learn how to walk with God and ask him to help us with our sin issues, instead of trying to tackle them on our own. It's a great book and I encourage to think about reading it. Take care my friends.

I'm trading my sorrows

Yesterday I found out that my only working car needs a new radiator and has a cracked CV boot. This morning I go to the mechanic to determine the "damage" to my checkbook. As I was preparing to leave this morning, I was listening to the song "Trading My Sorrows" by Darrel Evans. The only thing I can do it this situation is give it to God in exchange for his joy. I hope that I can encourage you with the idea that no matter what the state of our circumstances, God knows best for us and that's all we need to know. I go forward this morning with a confidence that I know is not my own. Thank you God that your ways are better than my ways. Amen.

Trouble with our Jeep this week

On my way home from St. Cloud last Wednesday night, the transfer case of our Jeep blew open while I was driving. Wow, what a loud noise! Upon further inspection, it looks like it's pretty well ruined and therefore the Jeep is out of commission at this point. I didn't have a cell phone with me that day, so I proceeded to flag down another car to give me a ride back to Cold Spring. I just so happens that the man who stopped for me is a pastor who was leading a church out in California and recently moved back to Minnesota. He currently lives in Paynesville which is just down the road from Cold Spring. Even though it was an awful experience, the Lord provided me an opportunity to be encouraged by this pastor named Dustin. As he told me the his story of why the church he was pastoring pretty much fell apart and the move back to Minnesota, I quickly forgot about the Jeep and being frustrated about it. It's amazing how God can redirect our attention in a crisis even without us knowing it. Please pray for Dustin and his family as they discern where God needs them to go next. Thanks.

Hello all -
I had a rough day today. I was in a lot of physical pain and my attitude showed it. I have about $4000 of outstanding medical bills, I don't have health insurance, and I really don't have a way to pay for them. I ask myself the question: Why did I make the decision to step out into a ministry situation without insurance? Was this decision a step of faith or stupidity? Today I'm having a hard time deciding. On one hand, I completely trust God with my life, and yes, even my financial situation. On the other hand, I still live in this hard, cruel world of ours. How does one find the balance between living for God and not for the world? I know that the answer is to trust God with everything that I have. I sometimes wonder if I am really trusting God or am I just being irresponsible with my choices? Even though I am faced with the challenge of how to deal with my medical bills, I still believe that God is calling me to continue in the work he has prepared for me. I'm sure many of you have been faced with the same questions that I battle on a regular basis: How do I know what God's will is for my life? How do I know that I am being obedient to God's directives for me? These are questions that I am have to be in continual prayer about with God. Only God can help me down this often dangerous road of life. It is on days like today that I am reminded that I must cling to the truths of God's Word and develop and even greater dependence on him. God, please direct me in prayer on how I can trust in you more and more every day. Amen.

Please pray that God would provide a way for us to meet the medical bill we have from Marty's accident. Although we are quite frustrated that the camp we worked for in December and January isn't covering it under their workmen's comp insurance, we were sure hoping they might turn their generous side toward us, but aparently not. Praise the Lord that we are in this world but not of it. But like the song says, if that's going to be the way of it, then "Lord I need more of you" Please pray for the grace to receive the hard truth that we may have to pay for this ourselves. Otherwise, we ask the Lord for his mercy, that He might provide a way out for us, 'cuz we sure don't have the $$ to pay the hospital for his emergency visit. Thanks everyone!

Everyday is a mystery for Marty. Today he's really hurting; the pain is back. Yesterday it was ok! We went to church, out to lunch, and ran a couple of errands in the afternoon. Maybe it was just too much. Please pray for physical healing for him, too.

Am I afraid to let go, and let God?

Today, at church (Quarry Commuity Church, Monticello) our pastor (Michael Grose) asked the question, Why don't we change? And I reflected, "Am I scared of what the Lord might do (or not do, or say, or not say) if I just give IT (whatever "it" is) to him? If I change from being ME centered, to HE centered, what might happen?" Well, many of you know that Marty and I (mostly Marty, I will admit) have already decided to lay it down at His feet. We've realized, as Richard--who received new life through Holy Baptism today at church--said, "...(we) need someone higher up to run (our) lives, not (ourselves), cuz if (we) do it, then it's gonna get all messed up!" So, I'm letting you all know that I too, have made a commitment, a decision, to allow God to show me what's ahead if I just let it go and let Him take the lead.
You all know that my IT is a baby. I am so afraid that if and when I give my desire to Him, that He may have other plans for me. But if I hold onto my longing, is that achieving anything greater for me? Are my (our) chances of a pregnancy or adoption any greater if I hold onto the desire? No they're not. So, as hard as it (and I don't know why it's so hard) I choose to let Him have my pain, my desire. Who knows what's ahead? Only God!!

At the Freund's house this week

These are the Freund's twins, Jack (who's formal name is John, but he definately prefers Jack!) and Lexi (who's formal name is Alexis). They're seven. Jack is eating a Scooby Doo fruit roll-up here. They love 'em. From an adults point, I think they're gross! Pure sugar! But they loved them. And besides, they're Scooby. . . that makes 'em better, right?

Carson, who's 11, and Marty had a great time challenging each other on a computer-war game! Lots of great male bonding happening here :)

This is the Freund's dog, Amber. She's a 2 yr old Golden Retreiver. She and Bailey (our doggie) had so much fun together.

This is their 16 yr old daughter Amanda. She was watching me and the twins have a scool lesson!

MB and I are watching the Freund kids this week in Big Lake. We are having a great time so far. Beth and Jim were so good to watch Bailey, our Brittany Spaniel, while we were at Honey Rock Camp this winter. It's interesting to have four kids with such different personalities. It provides for some interesting drama that's for sure. Take care all.

Hello friends. I, Marty, am finally feeling quite a bit better since my snow tubing accident on Thursday, Jan 26th. I can finally sit up in a chair without too much pain. I write this post with much excitement in my heart. Mary Beth and I waiting to hear back from Trout Lake Camp http://troutlakecamp.org where we hope to be serving this summer. If we are accepted, I will be serving as the Head Wrangler and Mary Beth will be the Arts & Crafts Instructor. Although we are still working out final details, all indications are good so far. This would an answer to a prayer that we have been praying for quite some time now. The goal is then to be employed at a camp in Ohio called Marmon Valley Farm http://www.marmonvalley.com, which is a Christian horse camp. The Horsemanship Director of Trout Lake is the sister of the Horsemanship Director at Marmon Valley. This will be a huge step in our ministry and we are very excited about how God will work in our lives. Back Home in Minnesota

Unfortunately I, Marty, had a snow tubing accident a little over a week ago while visiting Silver Birch Ranch http://www.silverbirchranch.org I had to go into the emergency room because I bruised my ribs and diaphragm and I was having trouble breathing. I don't have any broken bones, but I am very banged up. As a result, Mary Beth and I made the tough decision to leave Honey Rock and move back to Minnesota so that I could recover. My recovery is going fairly well, but I am still in a lot of pain. I do have some strong pain meds that are helping me relax. Praise God for Mary Beth, she packed up our entire apartment and drove the 7 hours back to Minnesota by herself. I don't know what I would do without her. Please pray for my recovery and that we can get back to doing the Lord's work soon. Please feel free to send us an email if you would like to reconnect or have any questions. Take care Y'all.

My purpose. . .God's glory!

We aren't here for own glory. This life isn't about MY daily successes, it's about His daily successes. Yes, I know that, but yesterday (Monday) I was getting pretty frustrated that "I" wasn't being glorified (thanked/appreciated). I wondered, "How is God being glorified by my cutting 15 carrots for dinner?" My hands were sore, orange, and they stunk!! So, I stewed most of the day, while my feet and back were getting all the more sore from standing on a hard cement kitchen floor for eight hours.

Then, when I got home last night, Marty and I prayed together and I was reminded that my purpose here is for Him. That doesn't mean He doesn't care about me. He does! I know that He sees me and every little pain or trial I go through. Amen!! Praise the Lord that He is concerned about every detail of our lives, yet it is for Him that we live an breathe. For Him, not for us. Gosh, the first time this really sunk in, I was in awe. Why hadn't I understood that before? But God is patient and loving. Even to me!

G'd night everyone. It's just after 7:00 here as I walked back from the dining hall. It's cold, but not biting cold. I love the peace and quiet, yet in the not-so-far distance I can hear teenagers laughing at the broom ball court. God is so creative, isn't He? :)

Hey Everyone! I wanted you all to know that I'm feeling much better. The doc in Eagle River (town about 10 miles from here) gave me some cough medicine with codine so I've been a much happier gal :) Please pray for my sister though, she told me she's been very sick with a fever and vomitting. Ick! I'm just lucky I didn't get that sick.

To my mom and dad, and anyone else who is asking themselves "I thought they were really set on Forest Springs and the LTD training. . . now they're NOT going? What's going on" I thought I'd try to address this. As Marty said in his message a few days ago, we realize that what drew us to the LTD program was not so much the program itself, but the fact that we thought that was the only way we could get some hands-on training in order to prepare us for what it might be like to work at, maybe even operate, a Christian camp. Well, now after being here at HoneyRock just a few weeks, we realize that we CAN get experience without having to go thru a year-long, academic intenseive (Marty would have to write a thesis paper alongside through the rigorous training) experience. We're certainly not against anyone going through the LTD training or saying anything negative about Camp Forest Springs, but we want to get our feet wet NOW! And God seems to be paving the way for that! But like Marty said, we don't have any idea what we will do after March 18th. Hopefeully we (or maybe just Marty) can get another seasonal-staff type of position here or at another camp. If possible, I'd really like to be able to rent a place off-site so that we could have Bailey back and maybe I could teach or substitute teach in the area (wherever that may be) OR maybe I can get a seasonal position at the camp too. I think I'd really like to check into programming positions though--something where I can be more interactive with the students/campers!

To those of you who have sent us money to support us, we want to say thank you!!! We have already needed to use some of that support (like last week when I went into the Urgent Care. We had to pay cash for my two perscriptions, and if it hadn't been for your generous gifts, God using them through you for us, I'm not sure I would have been able to get the medicine I needed to recover) and the remainder of it we've put into a savings account. We will contact you individually to further discuss how the funds might continue to support us because as we've said, we're making a HUGE vocation change here, and the fact is, we're living on God's timetable from here on out. We definitely may be in need of financial support in the future if we are employed at a camp that doesn't pay us directly. (Such as would be the case if we were to ever go on full-time staff at Camp Forest Springs)

Well, we have over 100 middle school students here this week! The meals today were crazy! 18 of everything! (the campers sit at talbles of 10) We had pizza last night and spaghetti tonight. Both of which 13 year olds love! I'm so tired; I think I'll head over to our little apt. and try to go to bed in about an hour. Marty's out with the wrangler, Ryan, giving sleigh rides. It's a beautiful night here.

Reflections on my purpose

I worked a full 8-hour shift today! I feel quite a bit better, but I'm still coughing quite a bit--despite the cough syrup the doctor perscribed for me. Oh well, I'm just glad the aches and pains are gone for the most part.

I realize that being back in the kitchen doesn't allow me time to interact with the staff and campers much. I SO wish I could do more of that. But this is where God needs me right now; so I'm here to serve. But it's tough--once in a while someone will come into the Lodge for hot chocolate or a cookie, and then I get to say HI at least. I'm very tired right now, but in an hour, one of the groups has a time of worship, so I'm going to try to go to that. I need that right now.

Marty on the other hand, interacts with campers and other staff members ALL the time. We did get more snow (last night) so he's out with the other wrangler and the draft team for a sleigh ride, or two! He invited me to come along, but I think I'm more content warm and inside! Like Robin Day (the wife of Jeff Day, a student in the LTD program at Camp Forest Springs) said, "you have to have a way to remember why you're here", so I believe God has a purpose for me here, tucked away in the kitchen, but it's tough to remember that sometimes!

Well, tomorrow is Saturday! Two of the groups are leaving, so it'll just be one for New Year's Day/Eve. Then, a few new groups come for the following week. I think we're pretty much non-stop busy 'til the 13th or so.

On a personal note, I miss Bailey Jo so much!! I can just smell her, and touch her if I close my eyes and imagine her. Beth says she's doing just great, and loves to play with their dog and with their children. That makes me happy, of course, but I still miss her lots. And it's been worse with me being sick. I hope now, that I'll be more busy, that I won't have as much time to think about her. Please pray for me to have peace about her. Thanks

Wednesday, December 28th

Well, only a few more days until 2006! Mary Beth is quite ill at the moment and I am going to take her into the doctor in the morning. Please pray that she will recover quickly so she can be back into the kitchen. We have 3 retreat groups here at Honey Rock this week totaling about 150 people. It's great to have people up here this week since it was pretty lonely up here last week. I had my first set of camper trail rides on the horses today. It went well. I am quickly discovering who my favorites horses are and who I don't like very much. I am particularly fond of Alex, the short, fat, little horse I rode today. He's easy to get on and he's very gentle. Some of the horses are a little more spirited which is not always a good thing. We need some more snow up here so that we can pull the sleigh with our draft team. I look forward to that.

Our friend's the Menezes who are currently serving at Camp Forest Springs are preparing to go to the Ukraine next summer with the support of the Minnesota Baptist Confernence. We found that out last week and we are excited to here that they are going to be able to go back there next year.

Please pray for Mary Beth and I as we have decided against going to Camp Forest Springs in June. After prayful consideration, we have decided that we are going to continue to seek seasonal and full-time employment in camping ministry. Our experience at Honey Rock so far has given us confidence that we can continue to learn and grow in our ministry. We are currently employed with Honey Rock until March 18th. We do not know what we will be doing after that point so please pray as we determine our next step with the Lord's help. Thank for you for those who have already given to our support fund. We plan to use those support funds in our future ministry and we will continue to update you on where God is leading us.

Christmas 2005

(Above) This is our Honey Rock staff Christmas party. There's Marty (standing in the front, left side, and me sitting on the floor in a red sweatshirt/sweater) We had it at a place they call 'The Farm' about 5 miles south of camp. It's a lodge that the EV Free church nearby uses for its youth group gatherings. We had a spaghetti dinner and played the 'white elephant gift' exchange game.

(below) Our Christmas gifts to each other. I gave Marty a Shane & Shane CD/DVD and he gave me a HoneyRock hooded (a Hoodie!) sweatshirt.

This is Mike & Robyn McMurry. I work in the kitchen with Robyn. She and her family live in Eagle River, not far from Camp. They were so sweet and generous as they invited us to their church Chirstmas Eve and then over for a little snack and a few goodies. On Christmas Day we went over about 12:30 for dinner and games. Thank you Jesus, for sending these warm loving people into our lives and especially on Christmas!!

Mike and Robyn's daughter, Molly, plays the drums. So, Marty and she jammed together a little bit. They're playing "The Lord is a Warrior" by Cademon's Call. They sounded great.

Well, I am writing this morning with a cold. I just hate coughs and a stuffed up head. I slept better last night, but the two nights previous were not so nice to me. Please send up your prayers for me. Being here alone at Camp during the holiday break was unique. It was so wonderful though as we drove through the wildnerness on the cold, snowy Christmas Eve. Really, with our Jeep headlights shining on the snow on the evergreen trees, it was beautiful!

Well, it's just after Noon, and the campers will start arriving about this time tomorrow. So, here we go!

Well it's been an interesting couple of days for us here in NorthEast Wisconsin. There are only a few people here at Honey Rock this week. Most of the staff is off celebrating Christmas with relatives. Mary Beth will be celebrating Christmas with a family that we have met here at camp. We will attend a church service in Three Lakes, a town nearby. Yesterday we got to visit a couple of families that we met at Camp Forest Springs from this summer. We are gearing up for retreats that start to come on the 27th of this month and pretty much every weekend until March. It should be a busy but rewarding winter season here at Honey Rock.

I was reading today from a book called "The Barbarian Way" by Erwin McManus. The preface of his book is that the Christian way is in his words barbaric and often dangerous. Christ did not call us to walk an easy road, but a road full of adventure and danger. However, Christ promises us that he will be with us on our sometimes uncertain road. All we have to do is embrace the promise of his love, grace, and forgiveness. I pray that in this Christmas season that Christ's promises will ring true to you. Jesus, thank you for your life and the sacrafice of your death on the cross so that we might be forgiven of our sins and be washed clean by your blood. I pray that this message finds you full of hope and in remembrance of our Lord Jesus Christ. Take care and God bless you this Christmas. Happy New Year!

Christmas Break

Well, we are currently on Christmas break starting today. Mary Beth and I are planning to visit Fort Wilderness http://www.fortwilderness.com which is another camp here in NorthEast Wisconsin that we are interested in possibly working at in the future. We have enjoyed our first week of camp learning and preparing for the retreat groups that are coming on Dec. 27th. Our prayer is that God will use us effectively here at Honey Rock. In case you were wondering why it's called Honey Rock, here's the Bible verse that it's based on:
Psalm 81:16: But you would be fed with the finest of wheat; with honey from the rock I would satisfy you."

From MB: We just returned after an afternoon of exploring this area. We made it over to The Fort (Fort Wilderness). It's a beautiful place (Marty had been there before) but there were no staff around, so we just walked around a little bit. It's a lot like HoneyRock in that it's very ranch-style/wilderness-y, if you know what I mean.

I am eager for the retreats to begin next week. Why? I'm excited to see God's work revealed in these teens' lives. Many are probably like we were. I remember junior high and even high school retreats with my pastor John and my youth leader, Troy. I always enjoyed them, but the first few were like "What is this faith thing, this "Christian" thing all about?" Well, thank the Lord I had great role models and I'll never forget some of those long talks and crys with leaders and counselors. Now I hope that God sees it in our life plan for us to be those leaders. I asked Marty if they (he and his boss, Ryan) would have a chance to really talk with the kids. He said he thought so and hoped to pray with them if he could. Those kids will be on a KP (kitchen patrol) rotating schedule, too, I believe. So, I hope that in the recesses of the kitchen, I will have a few opportunities for witness as well. Please pray for us and how God would use our time here to further His kingdom. "Better is one day in His courts (I think HoneyRock qualifies as one of His courts, don't you?) than thousands elsewhere", right? AMEM! Ok, better close; I'll write more later. Hello,

Hey, we just thought we'd update you and let you know how/what we're doing. We arrived on Saturday afternoon. We were greeted by the couple that lives in the same building as we do. (they're from Alabama!) They helped us carry everything upstairs (of course, we're on the second floor) We two couples are the only ones we live there--for now! When church retreats come (for a week, I believe), sometimes a family or a couple might stay in one of the other two apts. Our place is great! HoneyRock (HR) really has provided a lot for us already (some cookware, a bed--nice queen sized mattress and frame), a little couch, a table and four chairs, and two dressers! Also, there was quite a bit of cookware, and table ware already in the cupboards. We have a small stove/oven and refreigerator too, so we can have cereal, pizza, coffee, toast etc. . . in our apt. But we are not far from the dining hall, and so far we've had every meal there! It's fun and refreshing to chat and socialize and pray with the other staff members. i'm sure there will be times though, when we will want some privacy, so it's nice that it's available.

Saturday evening was "family night" which meant that all the families were present for dinner. Many of the program directors/operations directors/staff live 5-10 miles off site with their families.

Sunday morning we went into one of the small towns with some of the staff and went to an E.V. Free church. it was very nice. So "country"! You know what I mean. We love it up here already. Marty says he never wants to leave!! In 9 years, that's the first time I've heard him say that (except when we were on the coast of CA!) :) hhaha :) Then we went out to eat and did a little shopping (thank goodness for $1 stores! They're great, right Hunter!?)

We slept really well last night (Saturday night was harder; I think with it being a new place and so much on our minds: Cody was adopted on Saturday,a nd while we're SO happy, of course, it's bitter sweet too) Speaking of dogs, we miss Bailey Jo terribly! Jim and Beth, we'd love to hear how it's been going!

We start orientation today. Marty's out with Ryan, the head wranger, already and I'm meeting with my boss in about 20 min. We now understand our place here a bit better, and I thought I'd share it with you too. About 1/2 of the staff is called "program staff" and they are mostly young adults (20-25) who just finished their BA or MA and may or may not have had mission experience (we've met some who've been to China, Taiwan, South Africa, Mexico) and they are "in charge" of those who come here on retreats (mostly church retreats from the area--youth groups I think) They are in their training period right now and will be thru this week.

We are part of the "operational/support staff" (Office people, lkitchen crew, maintenance crew, wranglers are among these) Of course, we too, are instrumental in catering to the retreat groups that will come (starting the 26th) but not as FULL TIME as program staffers.

Well, I suppose there's more to tell, but I gotta run back to the apt and then have my oritentaion with my boss, so I'll say good bye/love/prayers for now.

Humble Circumstances

I thought this was a great story on how humble circumstances can be the best thing for us.

Starting Over
The brother in humble circumstances ought to take pride in his high position.
James 1:9

Do you find yourself in humble circumstances? If so, James tells us that we are to take pride in this "high" position. These two things would seem to be an oxymoron. Most of us would not consider humble circumstances a high position. Successful business tells us that being on top means being wealthy, attaining favor and status, or having power to influence. However, Jesus influenced not from power, but from weakness.

J.C. Penney is a name synonymous with department store. He first launched his chain of "The Golden Rule" stores in 1907. In 1910 his first wife died. Three years later, he incorporated as the J.C. Penney company. In 1923 his second wife died giving birth to his son. In 1929 the stock market crashed and he lost $40 million.

By 1932, he had to sell out to satisfy...creditors. This left [Penney] virtually broke. ...Crushed in spirit from his loss and his health suddenly failing, Penney wound up in a Battle Creek, Michigan sanitarium. One morning he heard the distant singing of employees who gathered to start the day with God: Be not dismayed, whate'er betide, God will take care of you.... Penney followed the music to its source and slipped into a back row. He left a short time later a changed man, his health and spirit renewed, and ready to start the long climb back at age fifty-six.

By 1951 there was a J.C. Penney store in every state, and for the first time sales surpassed $1 billion a year. [John Woodbridge, ed., More Than Conquerors (Chicago, Illinois: Moody Press, 1992), 340-343.]

The success of J.C. Penney can be traced to God's mercy in his life to bring him out of his humble circumstance. Do you find yourself in a humble circumstance? God is the only one who can help you see your humble circumstance from His viewpoint-a high position. It is a high position because of what God is going to teach you in this place. He does not intend you to stay there; it is merely a stopping place to learn some important things you would not learn otherwise. Press into God and trust Him for the outcome to your circumstances.

Faithfulness

I have been think a lot about faithfulness lately. I have been struggling with finding work as of late and have allowed myself to get a little anxious about it. Through my prayers the Lord has reminded me that he is in charge and I am not. Sometimes it's hard to admit that there is very little in our lives that we can control. I am reminded of a verse from Jeremiah:
Jeremiah 29:11For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Also, a verse from Proverbs:
Proverbs 16:9In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.

When I think of this verse, I can relax because I know that I can plan my course but only the Lord will determine my steps.

Who does God call into Ministry?

I was thinking this morning about the idea of a call into ministry. I believe God calls us all into ministry at some level. Some are called to be servants of their local church, serving in local ministries. While others are called to be missionaries and evalengists. Although I will say that I believe it's important to be properly trained and equipped for the ministry in which you serve. That's not to say that we have to be extraordinarily gifted in order to serve our God. I am reminded in the following verse that Christ's disciples were just averages folks:

1 Corithians 1: 26-31
26Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, 29so that no one may boast before him. 30It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31Therefore, as it is written: "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord."

My challenge is to seek and find the ministry that God has prepared for me. I would challenge you all to do the same. Blessings!

Responding to God's Call

Mary Beth have moved to Cold Spring, Mn. My parents our out of the country this school year and have graciously allowed us to live in their home temporarily. We are selling our house in Becker to prepare for Christian ministry training which God willing will start in June 2006. We got an offer on our home last week and we praying for a smooth close in on Oct 24th. We have spent the past several days packing, moving, and unpacking. We all know what that process is like -- Yuck!

We are excited and a little scared about how God has been moving in our life as of late. On one hand, we are completely willing to serve Him in whatever capacity he sees fit. On the other hand, we don't always understand the reasoning behind God's movement in our lives. All we can do is remind ourselves that God's plan is always perfect and we must continually pray for his divine guidance.

My prayer for all of you is this: God, please move in the lives of your people in a mighty way. I pray that we all will open our hearts and allow you to rule our lives like only you can do. Thank you Lord Jesus for the good work that you are doing through your servants. May we continually look towards you for guidance, support, and direction. Amen.

Indecision

All of us struggle with indecision in our life at one time or another. When faced with a difficult situation, it's sometimes hard to decide the best choice. I too struggle with this issue. I found a verse recently that has helped me when I am faced with difficult choices.Matthew 5:37: "Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. "It doesn't surprise me to be reminded that Satan is the master of indecision in our lives. Satan knows when we are a crossroads and we have to make a tough choice. His goal is to encourage us to doubt and be fearful of the outcome of our decisions. I have been really working on making my 'Yes' be 'Yes' and my 'No' be 'No' lately. We must trust that God will be with us in life no matter which fork in the road we take. God is always there to help us determine our steps. I am reminded of the verse: Proverbs 16:9: "In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps."I pray this post will encourage you in the daily walk with the Lord. I would love to know how God is moving in your life today. I encourage you to share your story.

Taking Work Too Seriously

Do we as Americans in general take our jobs too seriously? Sometimes I feel that way. I deal with a variety of people a typical office environment. Sometimes I get the feeling that if one things goes wrong the world is going to fall apart for some of the people I work with. I know that I have been guilty of taking my work too seriously as well from time to time. Why do we do this? Is it that we don't trust that God is in control on situation?

I am big into Christian Camping. I worked two summers at Outlaw Ranch http://www.lutheransoutdoors.org/outlaw/index.htm affliated with an organization called Lutherans Outdoors http://www.lutheransoutdoors.org/. I also did some volunteer work with Ingham Okoboji http://www.chadpruden.com/okoboji/ in college as well.
I have been to Fort Wilderness http://www.fortwilderness.com/ with Grace Fellowship Church http://www.grace2you.org/ recently. I am applying to go through a Leadership Development Training (LTD) program with Camp Forest Springs http://www.campforestsprings.org next summer. I plan to post some pictures and of my camp experiences to my blog soon.

LifeLight Christian Music Festival

Grace of God

I was driving into work this morning and the Lord was speaking to me about grace. My reminded me that although I am a sinner, he grace is sufficient for me as the Lord states in the following verse:
2 Corinthians 12:9 But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.

So even though alone I am weak, the Lord's power is may perfect by my weakness. Praise God because I don't know what I would do otherwise. As I reflect on what the Lord is doing in my life I can only give him the credit and the praise -- not myself. Thank you Lord for all that you are doing through me. I pray that I am can be your servant here on earth. Thank you for transforming me in your new creation. I love you Lord. Amen.

Trip to Camp Forest Springs

MB and I traveled to Camp Forest Springs http://www.campforestsprings.org/ for a visit to check out the LTD (Leadership Training and Development) program. We had a wonderful time! We arrived around 3:00pm and it happened to be raining at the time. Go figure, the weekend we decide to visit it rains! Typical! We met with Dr. Larry Guthrie who is the Director of Educational Ministries and he runs the LTD program. Dr. Guthrie walked us through all aspects of the LTD program and what our year at Camp Forest Springs would entail. LTD is a very intense 10-11 month program designed to train and equip future Christian camp leaders. They train LTD staff on every aspect of Christian camping ministry work including: administration, Budgeting, Fund Raising, programming, Food Service, Grounds and Maintenance, etc. I was very impressed with Dr. Guthrie's commitment to Christian camping ministry and his extensive experience in training Christian leaders in the area of camping. After our initial meeting with Dr. Guthrie we were able to participate in an evening meal and program led by Pastor Harry Shields. I enjoyed Pastor Harry's message on the sufferings of Christ and how we as Christians share in that suffering. That evening we met several of the LTD and summer staff and had a chance to explore camp and enjoy some refreshments at the Main Street Cafe. We camped out on Friday night and got a chance to try out our new tent that we just got this summer. We woke up early on Saturday morning due to the fact that it got down to around 50 degrees and we were cold. We hustled over the Main Street Cafe for some hot coffee. We had to get creative in making the coffee because there we no coffee pots available at 6:30am so we had to make coffee in a couple of glass jars. Actually we weren't the first ones to try this idea - some campers had around had success in this effort. We had a chance to visit with a family that has been coming to camp for the past 5-6 years. It was great for me to realize that families are very committed to their spiritual growth and renewal that they come to camp on a regular basis as a part of their Christian walk. After breakfast Dr. Guthrie gave us an extensive tour and history of the camp. We are able to see all of the buildings and Larry explained many details about the philosophy and vision of Camp Forest Springs. He took us into Rib Lake, which is the closest town to camp and many of the staff live there. They have a small IGA grocery store, Library, an ice cream shop, etc. It's a typical Wisconsin small town but I really got the sense that is was a very special community. As part of the tour we got to visit the LTD apartments and met Moises and Sali Menezes from Brazil and the Ukraine. Moises is a LTD staff and plans to return to the Ukraine to start a camp there. I was able to use Babel Fish http://babelfish.altavista.com/ to translate the text into English. The Menezes have an awesome ministry story and we enjoyed meeting them. We went to lunch with them and after lunch Sali invited Mary Beth to join them for the afternoon. Larry asked me if I would help him hang a deer stand so I that was my afternoon activity. I enjoyed visiting Larry's house and he also educated me on the finer points of bow hunting for deer. He has quite a passion for deer hunting to the point where he has built an extra garage for all of his equipment and a place to hang and process the deer himself. We even got to shoot air rifle at a target station he as setup in the back yard. We almost had a chance to rid the property of an annoying squirrel but he got away to quickly. Larry and his wife Lois were so welcoming to me and I enjoyed the visit. Larry and I had a chance to discuss my interest in the LTD program and I indicated that I committed to pursuing the program to start in June 2006. He prayed for my application process and really encouraged me in the process. I headed back to camp and found Mary Beth at the LTD apartments. We were invited to stay with Menezes at the apartment which we quickly accepted after spending the night in the tent at 50 degrees. We had a great time visiting the Moises and Sali that evening. It was strange to be a camp on a Saturday night because it's the only night when the camp is not busy. On Sunday morning we were invited to attend the Woodland Community Church in Westboro. Moises joined us for the service. Many of the CFS staff attend Woodland and it was nice to see everyone there. After church we headed back to the camp and spent the rest of the morning with the Menezes family. Sali made lunch for us which was great. Although we wanted to stay longer, we reluctantly left camp around noon to head back to Becker, MN where we live. Overall it was a great weekend and Mary Beth and I are glad to decided to come. On the way home we discussed the weekend and were both in agreement that God is calling us to the LTD program. It's one of the only leadership training development programs in the country that is specifically designed for Christian camping ministry. We ask you to pray for our application process which will take a few months. We should get a confirmation around November as to whether or not we are accepted. Please pray that God's will be done in this process and that Mary Beth and I can be obedient to his calling in our lives. Amen.

Taking a Fork in the Road

For the past several months, I have been a IT consultant with Wells Fargo bank. Today is my last day. On Monday I start a new project with Boston Scientific: http://www.bostonscientific.com/ I can't say that I am sad about that. In a worldly sense, I was not able to accomplish what I set to do on this project. However I know that what I expected to accomplish was not the most important result of the experience. I believe I needed to learn patience, courage, and humility. I really had to draw near to the Lord and seek his direction. I was reminded that I am in desperate need of Jesus in every area of my life and in every decision. It used to difficult of me to admit that I needed Jesus for everything. I thought that I could do it on my own. I am proud to say that I know I need Jesus like I need air in my lungs and water to drink. I know that the real job is to continue to follow Jesus everyday and continue to develop a deeper, more intimate relationship with him. I also desire to encourage others to do the same. My prayer is that Jesus will meet you in the place where you are and write his name on your heart. Blessings!

Staying True in the Business World

As an independent contract employee, I have had the opportunity to work in a variety of business environments and circumstances. In my experience, I have seen that the business world has been increasingly less ethical and honest. I have found that it has been a challenge for to maintain my integrity and honesty without affecting the expectations of my clients and associates in the business. I have lost a few projects because I have been up-front with my perspective clients about the number of hours I am willing to work, my work philosophy, what I willing to do, and what I am not willing to do. I have found myself riding a fine line between holding up a high standard of integrity and satisfying the needs of the my client. Although there are increasing numbers of business people who are Christians and hold a high standard of integrity in their work, I still find myself being very careful about my business clients and the relationships I have with those clients. I have unfortunately had to work in business environments where I have misread the level of integrity and later discovered that I misjudged the situation. The question I have is this: How does one respond from Christian point of view to a business scenario where the level of integrity is below an acceptable Christian standard? I don't want to come across saying that I am without sin and have not made mistakes in my business dealings. However I have always tried to be honest about my mistakes and taken responsibility for them. What I cannot tolerate is an environment where the people I am working with our either afraid to be accountable for their actions or are unwilling to do so. Let me know what you think.

Call to Christian Camping Ministry

I have recently felt a deep call to pursue Christian camping ministry. For the past 9 years I have been working at a Database Administrator / Developer in the Information Technology industry. During the time, I have felt God tugging at my heart to consider fulltime ministry. Up until this year, I have always had a really good reason why I couldn't pursue a ministry career: not the right time, too many bills, I don't have the right training, not enough money, etc. About 3 months ago, I felt yet another tug at my heart from God that encouraged me to do some research into Christian ministry training specifically in the area of camping. I found an organization called Camp Forest Springs www.campforestsprings.org in the middle of Wisconsin near the town of Westboro. They have a Leadership Training and Development (LTD) program designed to prepare you for camping ministry. My wife, Mary Beth, and I are going to visit the camp this weekend to decide if we are going to apply for the program which would be 10 months long starting June of next year. My prayer is that if I am willing to give God everything I have he will be able to use it for his ultimate glory and purposes.

Personality Challenge

I have been challenged recently by a Christian co-worker who told me that I am "too intense". I am not really sure what she meant by that. I am working in a situation where there is a lack of information regarding what needs to be done, how it is currently done, and how to get help in answers these questions. It's a black hole project as I call it. As a result, I have not been dealing with this situation very well. I have been stressed, frustrated, angry, and down right disappointed at times. My co-worker has experienced the result of the feelings and has called me on the carpet. She has given me food for thought. I love it how God works through other people in our lives to show us things that we may not see on our own.

I do have a very intense personality. Being intense doesn't have to be a negative quality, does it? The questions I have are these: Can we use our unique personality in an effective way to reach people for the Kingdom of God just as it is or do we need to change who we are to be effective in ministry? I feel that we can use our personality just as it is as long as we are in continual prayer with the Lord to ensure that we are using our gifts, talents, and yes, personality in a Godly manner. I will be the first to admit that I have not been consistently conducting myself in a Godly manner throughout this work experience. I pray that God and I can work on this area of my life together. But the question that I am challenged by now is this: Who can strive for excellence in our work when we are up against situations where we are expected to produce quality work with a lack of resources? The Bible talks about speaking the truth in love? How does one define speaking the truth in love? Love from who's perspective -- me or the person I have speaking to?

Legacy

I'm been thinking a lot about what I would want my Legacy to be in life. Although I don't have any children yet, I think about what I would want my family and friends to say about me when I'm no longer here in earth. I would like to think that I inspired people in my life to pursue God with everything they have. I hope that people would say that I was kind, generous, loving, patient, slow to anger, and quick to forgive. l would like be thought of as someone would was always passionate about the Lord and the continued growth of Kingdom. I would want people to say that there was no doubt I loved the Lord with all my heart, soul, and strength. I would to think that I would be remembered not for the world things that I collected, but for the work that the Lord had been able to accomplish through me. As I say these things I feel the challenge to check myself in these areas coming into mind. My prayer is that with the help of the Lord I would to continue to work towards being that kind of person.
